The climate in Switzerland varies greatly in the different localities. It is generally temperate and Mediterranean. Summers tend to be warm and humid with short periods of rainfall. The winters in the mountains alternate between sun and snow. A weather phenomenon referred to as the ‘Fohn’ can occur at any time of the year. This is characterized by a wind with warm Mediterranean air crossing the Alps from Italy. Autumn generally tends to be the driest season, but the weather patterns in Switzerland can vary from year to year and are sometimes difficult to predict.

One of the popular pastimes in Switzerland is hiking. There are miles of un-marked trails. Hiking times are signposted and colour coded. Because of the winter climate and mountains, winter sports are also very popular for tourists and holiday-makers The top ski resorts sre Portes Du Soleil, Davos, Klosters, Zermatt and of course don’t forget the glamour of St Moritz.
There is also a fantastic opportunity to take in journey by train on the Glacier Express, one of Europe’s greatest rail journeys. If floating on the water appeals more you can take in one of the many lake cruises or ferry trips.
