Travel Guide to scotland
Scotland is the most northerly of the United Kingdom, occupying approximately one third of Great Britain. The name Scotland derives from the Latin word Scotia, land of the Scots. Scotland has been known to suffer extreme weather conditions, but is renowned for its beauty and unique culture. Hard-working, practical, and proud of their traditions, the Scots have a reputation for thrift that verges on miserliness. Holiday-makers and Tourists to the country, however, often remark on the generosity and friendliness of their hosts, as well as on the vibrancy of contemporary Scottish culture.

Scotland is bounded by England to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the west and north, and the North Sea to the east. The west coast is fringed by deep indentations (sea lochs or fjords) and by numerous islands, varying in size from mere rocks to the large landmasses.

has a temperate climate, with considerable variations. There is a smaller range of temperatures over the year in Scotland than in southern England.

You’ll be surprised at the number of museums and galleries you’ll find in Scotland. And you’ll be astounded to discover many of them offer free entry for the whole family. But for those film and theatre buffs among you, why not make a visit to the settings for some of the most iconic films in history? Crack the Da Vinci Code at Rossyln Chapel, take a Trainspotting tour of Leith, discover the real Braveheart story at Stirling’s Wallace Monument or get spooked reliving The Wicker Man at Culzean Castle, ride the carriages used for the Hogwarts Express along the Glenfinnan Viaduct when you go on a Harry Potter themed tour.

If you’re coming to Scotland to shop, best pack an extra suitcase. You’ll find all your favourite stores here, and some hidden gems you won’t find anywhere else.

Known as the City of Style, Glasgow is a shopper’s paradise, with everything from Top Shop to Emporio Armani within easy walking distance. Pop into Princes Square, a swanky centre packed with fabulous stores and top-notch eateries. Then pound the grand streets of the Merchant City, heaving funky boutiques and designer fashion, or find vintage heaven in the uber-chic West End.

Not to be outdone, Edinburgh offers everything from the glam of Harvey Nichols to the weird and wonderful independents on the Royal Mile. From designer handbags to handmade kilts, fabulous jewels to funky sporrans, it’s all here. Splash out on luxury labels like Louis Vuitton at Multrees Walk, then head to the specialist stores of the Old Town. Packed with one-off boutiques and a wonderful array of bars and restaurants, it’s the perfect place to round off a brilliant day shopping.
